Queen skips investiture ceremony because of sore back

LONDON – Buckingham Palace says the Queen has cancelled her appearance at an investiture ceremony because of a sore back.

The British monarch had been due to present knighthoods and other honours at Windsor Castle, 35 kilometres west of central London.

The palace said Friday that Prince Charles will preside over the ceremony.

Although the Queen’s back problem has already forced her to miss a church service in Scotland on Sunday, the 86-year-old head of state has attended other engagements and is still expected at Eton College, just down the road from the castle, later Friday.

Elizabeth is Britain’s second-longest-serving monarch, after Queen Victoria, and retains an active schedule — including eight announced events in coming weeks.
