TORONTO, Ont. – The brand new Sony Centre For The Performing Arts, closed for two years, re-opened in style on Friday.
Fireworks filled the streets and the opening show, Cirque Éloize ID, dazzled audiences.
Presenting spectacular visuals, the Quebec show featured bicycles and acrobats flying through the air, hypnotic choreography, and modern music. Ten circus disciplines including tumblers, jugglers and contortionists are also woven together to create a non-stop breathtaking, high-energy and explosive spectacle.
The Sony Centre, desiring to be a theatre “for the people,” plans to bring in a diverse lineup of multicultural acts and sound for the 2010-2011 season.
Shows coming to the “refurbished” theatre include Experience Hendrix, The Merchants of Bollywood, Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas! The Musical, and Kodo Drummers of Japan.
The Sony Centre, designated as a historical site by the City of Toronto, is celebrating 50 years this month.
