City Council votes to freeze wages

TORONTO, Ont. – After an over two hour debate, Tuesday afternoon, Toronto City Council has voted to freeze its wages.

The motion passed shortly before 5 p.m. by a vote of 39-3.

The issue on the table was a 2.6 per cent cost of living pay increase.

Budget Chief Mike Del Grande says he wants to send a message of sacrifice to city employees as well as unions when their contracts come up.

“Everybody in the city, not just the unions, will look at what we have done with respect to our own leadership, when it comes to that issue. You can lead or you can follow.”

However, some councillors are skeptical that unions will take notice of their actions and follow suit.

Councillor Frank Di Giorgio wondered if the employees will take the hint.

“Will the unions except zero as a base increase?”

The move will freeze salaries at $99-thousand and save taxpayers $110-thousand a year.
