TORONTO, Ont. – Despite stepped-up police patrols and surveillance, a sixth beating occurred in a Parkdale neighbourhood.
Toronto police are investigating whether this latest attack is related to five others in the neighbourhood that has left one man dead.
A 45-year-old man was walking home in the Queen Street West and Jameson Avenue area, around 3 a.m. Tuesday, when he was attacked. The man was treated in hospital and released with minor injuries.
Unlike the previous five cases, the victim in this violent attack is not mentally challenged.
“The victim was returning home when he attacked from behind, unprovoked,” Toronto police Const. Tony Vella told 680News. “He was punched in the face, he fell to the ground, (was) kicked and punched while on the ground, and the suspect then fled on foot.”
The man in the recent attack lives in one of the two buildings where all five of the previous victims live, including 62-year-old George Wass, a mentally challenged man who was beaten to death two weeks ago.
The assailant in each case is described as wearing dark clothing and has his face covered.
According to Const. Vella, investigators are trying to determine if the suspect in this attack is the same one wanted in the previous five attacks.
“Police believe it could be the same person but we still need to confirm that, but we have the responsibility to let the public know what has occurred in their neighbourhood,” said Vella.
Police are reminding the public to report any unusual occurrences to police, remain vigilant of their surroundings at all times, and take extra safety precautions.
