TORONTO, Ont. – There are more health concerns for hockey superstar Sidney Crosby, after it was revealed by Sportsnet 590 The Fan’s Bob McCown that Crosby has two cracked vertebrae in his neck.
Crosby suffered a concussion almost 13 months ago, but his agent says it’s impossible to determine when, where and how the neck injury actually occurred.
The injury, a fracture to his C1 and C2 vertebrae, was discovered by a spine specialist earlier this week, according to Crosby’s agent.
Further tests will be done over the next several days to determine whether Crosby’s injury has fully healed. A statement by the team estimated that this may be the case.
“The diagnosis of Dr. Robert S. Bray, a neurological spine specialist based in Los Angeles, is that Sidney Crosby had suffered a neck injury in addition to a concussion,” said the team release. “Dr. Bray reports that the neck injury is fully healed. Those findings will be evaluated by independent specialists over the next few days.”
It’s unclear when Crosby, who has only played eight games over the previous 12 months, will return to action.
The team has not excluded the possibility of the star returning for the playoffs, but all sides stress Crosby will only return to action when he is completely ready.
