OTTAWA – A former Royal Canadian Air Force fleet manager is warning the Harper government against buying the F-35 fighter jet.
Paul Maillet says the plane is not the best strategic choice and he does not believe the numbers he sees when it comes to cost.
“25-billion we have heard in the press, I would say 25-billion if we’re very very lucky. With regards to operation and maintenance, you’re looking at refuelling infrastructure costs and many other costs associated with this.”
Maillet worked on the CF-18 jets for over 12 years before he was named fleet manager in 1996. He has also been a candidate for the Green party in the past.
Maillet believes the government should suspend its involvement in the F-35 procurement until we decide on the most responsible route forward.
