Stephen Harper is promising Alberta Premier Alison Redford she’ll have Ottawa’s full support for rescue and recovery efforts as the province struggles to deal with heavy flooding.
The two spoke Friday by phone and agreed to maintain close contact to ensure a coordinated response to the disaster.
The prime minister has also spoken to Calgary Mayor Naheed Nenshi, who provided an update on the situation in his city, which includes Harper’s riding of Calgary Southwest.
Harper again promised Nenshi that the federal government will do all it can to help.
The mayor said the worst flooding is yet to come even as people flee to higher ground to escape the waters brimming out of the Bow and Elbow rivers.
Officials said as many as 100,000 people may have left their homes.
Meanwhile, in a statement, Toronto Mayor Rob Ford said: “On behalf of the City of Toronto, I would like to convey our full support to Mayor Nenshi and the City of Calgary in response to the recent flooding.”
“I directed the city manager late last night to offer full assistance to the City of Calgary. City staff have already contacted their counterparts in Calgary to support them in any way possible,” he added.
“To the residents of Calgary, our thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult time.”
