Father of kids killed by drunk driver tasered, arrested hours before his death by suicide

The father of three children killed by drunk driver Marco Muzzo in 2015 was visited by police and charged hours before his death by suicide.

Peel Regional Police confirm to CityNews that they were called to the home of Edward Lake on Father’s Day to investigate “an altercation.”

Police say when the officers arrived, an altercation occurred between Lake and police which resulted in Lake being tasered. He was then charged with one count of assault and released into the custody of paramedics, who transported him to a hospital where he was assessed and later released.

“Officers notified Victim Services of the incident, and Mr. Lake was also provided the contact information,” read the statement from police. “Peel Regional Police had no further interaction with Mr. Lake once he was transported to the Hospital.”

Police added that they have previously been called to the home but did not provide any further details, citing “privacy reasons.”

Lake, whose children – nine-year-old Daniel Neville-Lake, five-year-old brother Harrison, and two-year-old sister Milly along with the children’s 65-year-old grandfather, Gary Neville, were killed in a September 2015 crash in Vaughan – was found dead the next morning of an apparent suicide.

Jennifer Neville-Lake, the childrens’ mother, shared a post on Twitter Sunday on Father’s Day with a photo of the children’s gravestone with a tweet that said, “Father’s Day 2022. This shouldn’t be real. It can’t be.”

On Monday night, she tweeted out a photo of the family on Monday with a caption, “The eyes he shared with Harry are forever closed. Daniel’s curls will never shine in the sunlight again. I will never see Milly’s shy smile creep across his lips anymore. My children’s father, Edward Lake, has joined our kids so they can play together, forever,” adding “Mahal kita, Edward.”

“We are aware of and saddened by Mr. Lake’s tragic death, as well as the tragic circumstances that this family has faced,” said police.

Muzzo was sentenced to 10 years in prison in 2016 after pleading guilty to four counts of impaired driving causing death and two of impaired driving causing bodily harm. He was granted full parole on Feb. 9, 2021. Part of his parole conditions are that he avoid the victim’s families and not to reside in York Region, where the crash occurred, or Brampton where the Lakes live.
