‘Very troubling’: Off-duty York regional cop charged with impaired driving

York Regional Police say one of its officers was charged with impaired driving last weekend while off duty.

Authorities say a citizen reported a suspected impaired driver travelling northbound on Yonge Street in Bradford West Gwillimbury at around 9 p.m. on August 13, 2022.

Amanda Kengje, 43, was pulled over and arrested by South Simcoe police. She’s facing charges of operation while impaired and operation while impaired with an excess blood alcohol.

In a release, York police said Knegje had been a member of its force since 2020, assigned to Uniform Patrol.

She’s been suspended with pay.

“This is very troubling considering the work that York Regional Police is doing to combat impaired driving,” said Chief of Police Jim MacSween.

“We continue to remind our members of their responsibility to live the values of our organization, both on and off duty.”

“York Regional Police is committed to transparency and is accountable to our community,” MacSween added.

“When a member is charged with a criminal offence, that information is released to our community as a part of that commitment.”

Editor’s note: York police previously said the officer was also charged with dangerous operation but in a update on Tuesday said that charge was added in error.
