What foods did Toronto residents order the most in 2022? No. 1 might surprise you

We're getting a snapshot of what Canadians ate through DoorDash in 2022. Plus, the French baguette is honoured globally, and robotic dogs are given a licence to kill by police. Richard Southern and Erica Natividad discuss.

DoorDash has released a Toronto-specific list showing what residents ordered the most this year, and the delivered food item isn’t what you might think.

The online food ordering service concluded that burrito bowls, not burritos themselves, were the most beloved food delivery choice in Toronto. Perhaps more surprising was what ranked third.

Coffee. Torontonians had a knack for ordering hot coffee through DoorDash but were just as keen on iced coffee, which also cracked the top 10.

Toronto’s most ordered food items in 2022 (DoorDash)

  1. Burrito bowls
  2. Cheeseburger
  3. Coffee
  4. Chicken shawarma
  5. Beef patty
  6. Salad
  7. Garlic Knots
  8. Mango peach pie
  9. Iced coffee
  10. Jerk chicken

If you’re curious about mango peach pie, it’s a staple at Jollibee’s, which was first introduced on menus in 1995. Jollibee opened its first store in Toronto, in Scarborough, in April 2018.

Cheeseburgers, beef patties and jerk chicken are hardly surprising inclusions, but garlic knots? Many Italian restaurants and local pizzerias serve them, which is likely to explain the rise in popularity. Garlic knots also tend to be relatively inexpensive and delicious, a win-win for Torontonians.

We focus on the top-ordered desserts in Toronto, limited to the top 5. With Baklava’s cracking the list, Strawberry Cheesecake gets the honour at the top.

DoorDash also revealed the most expensive orders of the year in Canada, with the priciest order coming out of Outremont, Quebec, where someone spent $2,700 on 12 plates of kebabs, meat platters and salads.

Another pricy and unusual order came from Markham, where someone purchased every beauty product listed on DoorDash, while someone from Toronto ordered 32 chicken schnitzels, grilled chicken breasts and falafels.

Earlier this month, DoorDash Canada and Sephora announced a partnership to offer on-demand delivery of beauty products from all Sephora stores across Canada.

As for the shortest distanced order this year in Canada, that would be 210 metres (0.2 km) and 275 steps.
