University-King intersection closed for next 2 weeks due to watermain repairs

A massive watermain break has closed the intersection of King and University as crews work to repair it. Mark McAllister with the latest.

Watermain repairs will keep a key intersection in the financial district closed for the next several weeks.

Just before 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, a broken watermain flooded the intersection of University Avenue at King Street West while also forcing the closure of St. Andrew subway station for a brief time. Subway service has since resumed.

The City of Toronto says King Street between York and Simcoe streets and University Avenue between Adelaide and Wellington streets will be closed for the next two weeks in order to repair the broken watermain.

“The intersection will remain closed while work is carried out. Crews will work 24/7 to complete the repairs as quickly as possible,” city officials said in a Sunday evening tweet.

Pedestrians will be able to access sidewalks on the west side of University Avenue while both sidewalks will be open on King Street.

The closure of the intersection will also force the TTC to alter some of its service.

The 504A King streetcar will not service any stops between Sumach Street and Springhurst Loop while the 504B streetcar will not be running between Church Street and Dundas West subway station. Shuttle buses will operate between Dundas West station and King Street East at River Street.

Meanwhile, the city is expected to provide an update on repairs Monday to a partial sewer collapse which forced the closure of a stretch of Dufferin Street in Liberty Village on Saturday.
