Two people have been charged following a lengthy investigation into a $300 million renovation project at St. Michael’s Hospital in Toronto.

Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) say it relates to the hospital’s redevelopment project that was approved in 2011.

A year later, the hospital and Infrastructure Ontario (IO) began the process of picking the company to do the work. The investigation has found evidence of fraud related to a contract that was awarded in 2015.

At the time, IO said the project involved the construction of a new 17-storey patient-care tower at the corner of Queen and Victoria Streets and the renovation of approximately 150,000 square feet of existing space.

OPP said 50-year-old John Aquino and 58-year-old Vasos Georgiou, both from Toronto, have been charged with two counts of fraud over $5,000.

The two will appear in court on March 28.
