Whitby restaurant owner charged in sex assaults dating back to 2005

A Whitby restaurant owner who was previously charged in a workplace sexual assault investigation is now facing more than half-a-dozen additional charges after police say more alleged victims came forward.

Durham Regional Police originally charged James Chatterpaul in January 2023 after a person came forward claiming they were sexually assaulted by him at his restaurant. Chatterpaul is the owner of Chatterpaul’s restaurant at 3500 Brock Street in Whitby.

Since then, investigators say four more alleged victims have come forward, claiming they were sexually assaulted by Chatterpaul between 2005 and 2019.

Police say Chatterpaul often goes by the names “Chef Chad” or “Chad” and note that he was previously employed at an Oshawa restaurant.

Chatterpaul, 55, of Whitby, is facing seven additional counts of sexual assault.
