A man has been taken to a local hospital with serious injuries after he was trapped inside an elevator shaft at a downtown Toronto construction site.

Toronto police and Toronto fire officials were called to Lower Sherbourne Street and The Esplanade just before 3 p.m. on Monday for reports of an industrial accident involving a worker stuck inside a tunnel.

Police said a short time later the man was rescued and taken to a hospital. Toronto Paramedic Services tell CityNews that a 36-year-old man suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

Toronto Fire Services say the worker had been trapped inside an elevator shaft.

The Ministry of Labour will attend the scene. Road closures in the area have been lifted.
