Durham Regional Police officers responded to the scene on Simcoe Street North near Howden Road around 3:40 p.m.

Police say the driver of a Volkswagen and the driver of Nissan were travelling in opposite directions when they collided head-on.

The 70-year-old woman, who was in the front passenger seat of the Nissan, was taken to a local hospital where she later died.

The driver of the Nissan, a woman in her 50s, was airlifted to a Toronto-area trauma centre where she remains in serious condition.

A male passenger who was sitting in the back seat of the Nissan suffered minor injuries.

The male driver of the Volkswagen was also taken to hospital with minor injuries.
