Police update status of 15-year-old boy critically injured climbing TTC subway car

Toronto police shared an update on the condition of a 15-year-old boy that suffered a catastrophic head injury after allegedly trying to climb on top of a subway car in Scarborough.

Police were notified of an incident at TTC’s Warden Station around 6:15 p.m. on Monday following reports of a boy trying to climb on top of a moving subway train as it approached the station.

Though initially calling the victim a 16-year-old boy, on Tuesday, authorities confirmed that a 15-year-old was involved in the incident. The young teen was in the company of two other people, his sister and girlfriend, while on a westbound subway.

Police said that while the train was in motion, the 15-year-old boy allegedly opened the door leading to the adjoining car and climbed up between the two. He then struck his head on an unknown object and sustained critical injuries.

Investigators tell CityNews the boy had no pulse when emergency crews arrived and needed to be revived through CPR. He remains in the hospital under observation.

Police are still trying to determine why he decided to climb on top of the moving train. There is no indication the boy was trying to flee from anyone.

Due to the nature of the incident and the circumstances that led to the boy’s injury, police are hoping to speak with additional witnesses that were at Warden Station on Monday evening.
