‘Algae park’: Water in Toronto’s new Love Park turns bright green

Residents stopping by Toronto’s new Love Park were surprised by the water’s colour in the pond as it has turned a swampy, bright green only two weeks after the space was officially unveiled to the public.
A photo shared on Reddit on Monday captured the current state of the water in Love Park’s heart-shaped pond — one of its main features.
Redditors joked that the park looked more like “Algae Park” and “Mosquito Love Park” due to the colour of the water.
A city spokesperson said a mechanical malfunction is the root cause of the pond’s current state.
“City staff are working alongside both Waterfront Toronto and the contractor to address the issue and ensure the pond returns to working order as soon as possible,” they said.
“Some greening is expected to occur during this ‘balancing period,’ and the green shade is expected to subside as final adjustments are made.”

The city spokesperson said the pond needs time to establish as the ozone treatment is being calibrated.
“Part of this planned commissioning process is understanding what triggers imbalance and adjusting as required. This ongoing work will be affected by environmental factors such as summer weather conditions and changes like rain and heat,” they said.
“The green shade is expected to subside as adjustments are made and the system reaches stability. The city and Waterfront Toronto will continue to work with the contractor and pond designer to bring the pond water into balance.”
On June 23, the City of Toronto officially introduced Love Park to residents on the Harbourfront.
The new park is one of many waterfront projects, affirming the city’s commitment to ensuring “liveable, sustainable and connected communities along Toronto’s central waterfront.”
Along with the heart-shaped pond, there are nine bronze-cast Canadian animals and moveable café-style tables and chairs sponsored by the Waterfront BIA, along with a trellis, a drinking fountain and an off-leash area for dogs.
