SIU investigating after man fell to death from Vaughan highrise balcony

The province’s police watchdog is investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a man in Vaughan.

York Regional Police officers responded to man in crisis around 10 a.m. at a high-rise apartment on Portage Parkway, in the area of Highway 7 and Highway 400.

The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) says officers tried to bring the man to safety and negotiated with him for several hours.

The man fell to his death from a 52nd floor balcony around 5 p.m., according to the SIU.

The watchdog says three investigators and two forensic investigators have been assigned to the case. Anyone with information is being asked to contact SIU investigators.

The SIU is automatically called in to investigate incidents involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault.
