As the revitalization process continues at Canada’s oldest social-housing community, the new Regent Park Aquatic Centre opened to the public Saturday.
The high-tech facility, located at 640 Dundas Street East, features a lap pool, a leisure pool, a waterslide and other attractions.
The facility opening comes as Regent Park is revitalized to include more mixed-income housing.
City Councillors Paul Ainslie and Pam McConnell were on hand for the official ribbon-cutting ceremony on Saturday, along with Environment Minister Peter Kent.
“The Regent Park Aquatic Centre revitalization project will ensure that families in the community have a modern aquatic facility that promotes physical activity and healthy living for people of all ages,” Kent said at the ceremony.
“Our government is proud to have invested in this local project and will continue to make investments like this one, in line with our priorities of jobs, growth and long-term prosperity.”
The centre was jointly funded by all three levels of government. The federal and provincial governments contributed $1 million each, and the City contributed $14.6 million to this project.
