A man who opened fire on three people, killing two, was related to his victims, Toronto police said in an update on Tuesday night.
Detective Sergeant Tiffany Castell wouldn’t specify their relation, but confirmed the shooter and all three victims were family members.
The brazen daylight shooting took place in the Parliament Street and Dundas Street East area of Regent Park at around 1:30 p.m. Tuesday.
Castell said the dispute that led to the fatal gunshots actually started at a nearby residence on Arnold Avenue before spilling out into the streets.
A male victim was rushed to a hospital, where he later died, while a second man was pronounced dead at the scene.
A third victim, a woman, suffered non life-threatening injuries and she’s expected to be released from hospital shortly.
The suspect, who police have not yet named, was arrested on Sackville Street after a brief foot chase and altercation with officers.
Two officers suffered arm and leg injuries during the confrontation. One was treated and released and the other remains in hospital.
Castell said a firearm has been recovered and the suspect is in custody.
“It’s the middle of the day in downtown Toronto …it’s certainly terrifying,” Castell said.
“There were bullets flying everywhere,” she added. “The fact that we didn’t have anyone else hit is a bit of a miracle.”
A significant police presence remains in the area.
Police say Dundas Street East is closed between Parliament Street and Sackville Street, and delays are expected.
Photos from a nearby scene show several officers armed with rifles patrolling Riverdale West Park and accompanied by police dogs.
