The province’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has been called in after a driver crashed into a Richmond Hill ravine on Wednesday morning.
A York Regional Police officer had been pursuing the 19-year-old woman moments before the crash, the SIU said.
The crash forced police to shut down part of Bathurst Street north of Highway 7. Bathurst was closed between Ner Israel Drive and Teefy Avenue after the 8 a.m. crash.
The woman, the only person in the car, suffered a broken leg and a broken arm.
The SIU says a police officer was driving south on Bathurst around 7:30 a.m. and then made a U-turn to follow the woman, who was heading north.
The officer pursued the woman, who drove off the road and down an embankment.
The SIU investigates cases involving police when there’s a death, serious injury or allegations of sex assault.
