Victim identified in Scarborough shooting

Toronto police have identified a man who was fatally shot in Scarborough on Thursday.

Officers responded to a shooting call near a Forest Creek Pathway housing complex around 8:30 p.m. and found the victim lying unconscious in a grass pathway.  Police say the victim wasn’t carrying ID.

He has now been identified as Kwado “Kojo” Mensah, 20, of Toronto.

During his weekly talk show on CFRB Sunday, Mayor Rob Ford said he had coached “Kojo” in football at Don Bosco Catholic Secondary School.

“He was truly a very nice, polite young man. He never gave us any problems and he was a phenomenal football player and it tears me apart when things like that happen so close to home,” said Ford.

“When a young man’s life is taken away at a very young age, 20 years old, it’s very bothersome and I just want to say he will be missed and I don’t think there’s anyone who could say anything bad about Kojo Mensah.”

An autopsy concluded that Mensah died from a gunshot to the chest.

Police say further investigation determined that his shooting was connected to a second shooting on the same day.

A 32-year-old man arrived at hospital around 11:20 p.m. with a gunshot wound to his lower body. He advised police that he had been shot earlier in the evening in Scarborough.

He was treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

The suspect has been described as a black man with a medium complexion, between 18 to 23 years of age, approximately five-feet-eight-inches tall with a medium build and short black hair. He was wearing a dark-blue Adidas track suit and Nike running shoes.

Witnesses saw a car speeding away from the area where Mensah was found.

“The consensus seems to be that there were several people in the area, anywhere from three to five…what we do know is that there were several gun shots,” said Insp. Tim Crone.
