North York apartment residents protest over mold, cockroaches & security issues

Residents of a North York apartment building held a protest outside their home on Saturday, saying that after years of water leaks, mold, cockroaches and break-ins, they’ve had enough.
Dozens gathered outside 100 Parkway Forest Drive, in the Sheppard Avenue East and Don Mills Road area, Saturday afternoon to demand something be done to improve their living conditions.
“Security is the biggest concern here,” resident Muhammed Khan said. “We can’t at night even leave our children, and here in the lobby because there are suspicious people.”
Roly Morris, the president of Timbercreek Communities, which manages the building, appeared at the protest and told CityNews that there is a problem.
“We have ongoing monthly pest control service here,” he said. “Sometimes it’s not effective because we’re not getting at the source. Sometimes it’s the company doing it, we just change organizations. (It’s a) very challenging issue to bring under control.”
An impromptu meeting between the landlord and tenants Saturday afternoon broke down shortly after it began.
“It’s just sad they don’t care. I pay so much money (and I) have to live like this,” resident Ashley Alonso said.
As far as next steps, residents say they’ve been told by their city councillor that a building inspector will be coming to do a tour of the building this week. They say if they don’t get anywhere with the landlord they’ll be taking their complaints to city hall.
