Roy Halladay extended his record to 11-2 against a tough Texas team Tuesday night as the Blue Jays held on to beat the Rangers 3-2.
Halladay, one of five Jays selected to the American League all-star team, dominated with 7 2/3 scoreless innings, while Eric Hinske and Russ Adams both homered for the bluebirds.
“That was as strong as I’ve seen him all year,” Blue Jays manager John Gibbons said of Halladay’s outing. “That’s been a tough team on him and it’s a tough place to pitch.”
The Jays hurler’s last game in Arlington was almost a year ago, and the fateful outing ended his season after he sustained a fractured left tibia on a ball hit by Ranger Kevin Mench.
“I didn’t think about last year,” Halladay said. “I never put a lot of stock in thinking about coming back here.”
Tuesday’s game almost didn’t happen, as a rain delay postponed the start by more than an hour.
Fellow all-star B.J. Ryan managed to get his 23 rd save in 24 chances but it didn’t come easy. He gave up an RBI single to Ian Kinsler in the ninth inning to make it 3-1, then with two outs a wild pitch got past catcher Bengie Molina allowing Mark DeRosa to score. Finally, Ryan got Gary Matthews Jr. to fly out and end the game.
Rangers rookie left-hander John Koronka had a tough night, allowing three runs and six hits in eight innings.
The Jays gained a game in the AL East on the Boston Red Sox and the New York Yankees, both of whom lost Tuesday. Toronto trails Boston by four games, and is in a virtual tie with the second-place Yankees.
