CO-OP Cabs Celebrates 50th Anniversary

The taxi service celebrated its 50th anniversary at the Pine Valley Banquet Hall where about 100 drivers got to sit down and enjoy a meal together and probably swap some funny stories from the road.

Francisco Romes has been with the company longer than he ever would’ve expected.

“I’ve been driving for 35 years. I like it. I never thought that I was going to be that long,” he explained.

“Always in the back of your mind you think maybe one day you’re going to change jobs and start doing something else.”

But he never did. He loves his job and says he spends more time in his cab, which he refers to as his “office”, than he does at home.

Romes came to Canada from Uruguay in 1968 and started driving a cab to improve his English skills.

“I feel great. I accomplished what I want. Doing something different,” he said.

The company has apparently done a good job of keeping its employees happy and part of that may be due to the fact that everyone has an equal share. Drivers aren’t just employees of the cab company, they’re shareholders too.
