A Canadian military convoy in Afghanistan has reportedly been hit by a car bomb.
The blast and several other explosions near a Canadian compound in Kandahar city injured four soldiers and a civilian. The nationalities of the soldiers weren’t immediately clear.
A wrecked car used in the bombing was seen near two burning Canadian military vehicles. Witnesses said they saw a huge explosion and a burst of flames, followed by several smaller blasts.
All took place near a camp housing Canada’s Provincial Reconstruction Team in southern Afghanistan.
The bombing took place less than 24 hours after a highway attack left two Canadian soldiers injured, one seriously. The patrol was struck in an area known as ‘Ambush Alley’, and outgoing commander Lieut.-Col. Ian Hope described it as such.
Corp. Jesse Melnyck, one of the injured soldiers, was listed in stable, non-critical condition in Kandahar. The other was reportedly in good condition at the Kandahar Air Field hospital.
Canadian soldiers, assisted by Afghan troops, killed dozens of Taliban fighters in a military operation over the weekend.
There are 2,200 Canadian troops currently deployed in the country. A total of 26 Canadians – 25 soldiers and a diplomat – have been killed there since 2002.
