The Canadian Food Inspection Agency warns Select Food Products of Toronto has issued a voluntary recall of some of its canned goods, over fears they may be contaminated with Clostridium botulinum, a bacterium that can produce potentially deadly toxins.
The company is warning anyone who has the following at home not to open them and certainly not to consume them:
Select Beef Gravy, 2.84-litre (100-oz) size, UPC: 0 63600 00815; all lot codes up to and including 2336. (Lot codes are embossed on the lid.)
Fast Eddie’s Crazy Chili Sauce, 2.83-kg (6-lb, 4-oz) size; UPC: 0 63600 01698; all lot codes up to and including 1786.
The foods were made and sold in Ontario, but may also have been in stores nationwide. So far, there have been no reports of any illnesses from the suspect foods and officials would like to keep it that way.
Food contaminated with C. botulinum toxin may not look or smell spoiled. Eating it can cause nausea, vomiting, fatigue, dizziness, headache, double-vision, dry throat, respiratory failure and paralysis – and even death.
