Will The Domi Allegations Affect Belinda Stronach’s Political Ambitions?

But in the case of Belinda Stronach a bad ‘spell’ of P.R. may not exactly boost her profile in the world of politics.
The Aurora-area MP has been named in a divorce proceeding involving Tie Domi and his wife. And while neither the ex-Leaf or the current Liberal is commenting on the alleged affair, many in her home riding are wondering if voters will care when it comes to marking their X.
It’s clear opinion is already divided.
“He’s just a regular person,” notes one constituent. “If they had an affair, they had an affair.”
But others aren’t so charitable. “Someone that’s in her position, I think it’s not very nice.”
Most take pains to note nothing has been proven so it may all be a moot point. Still, they can’t help but gossip about the rumours and the innuendo.
“I think she’s getting all she deserves,” one prospective voter avers.
It’s not the first time Stronach’s love life has been in the spotlight. She was dating MP Peter MacKay for a time, but that ended when she crossed the floor to join the Liberals. She’s also been linked to former U.S. President Bill Clinton and was once married to Olympic speed skater Johann Olav Koss.
Leanne Domi claims her husband is currently living at the Magna Golf Course, which is owned by the Stronach family and where the high profile Grit resides when she’s not in Ottawa.
Still, despite the brewing scandal, most seem skeptical that in the often dirty world of politics, this incident will have any real effect in the long run.
“She has a lot of weight in this area,” one local resident agrees. “Her family has done very well for this area. I will wait and see. I have not made up my mind about the next federal election.”
Besides, politicians know voter memories are short. And unless the current Tory minority government falls soon, that next federal election is still a long way away.
