The National League Championship Series is now a best-of-three.
The New York Mets broke out the big bats Sunday night, rebounding from consecutive losses and evening their best-of-seven series with the St. Louis Cardinals thanks to a 12-5 win on the road.
What started as a close affair got out of control when Carlos Delgado took over in the fifth inning. The former Jays slugger belted a three-run homer and added a two-run double an inning later while David Wright and Carlos Beltran also went deep for New York.
Beltran had two solo home runs, and he and Delgado each have three for the series.
Jose Valentin also got in on the action, putting the finishing touches on a six-run sixth with a bases clearing double that made it 11-3.
The offensive explosion was sorely needed for the Mets, who mustered just three hits in a 5-0 Game 3 loss.
Oliver Perez didn’t exactly pitch brilliantly for New York, but he did get the win allowing five runs and nine hits over 5 2/3 innings. It was his first career post-seasons start and he gave up home runs to David Eckstein, Jim Edmonds and Yadier Molina.
Brad Thompson, who was on the mound when things got out of hand in the sixth, took the loss for the Cardinals.
Game 5 goes Monday from Busch Stadium in St. Louis and will feature Tom Glavine for the Mets and Jeff Weaver for the Cards.
The dup faced off in Game 1 of the series, and Glavine delivered his second gem of the post-season in a Mets win. The 40-year-old lefty has yet to allow an earned run in the playoffs.
Game 6, which the Mets ensured will take place thanks to Sunday’s win, will take place at Shea Stadium in New York Wednesday night.
