Nickelback Wins At American Music Awards

Two Canadian acts were feted at the American Music Awards in Los Angeles Tuesday night, one with an award and one with a featured performance.

Alberta rockers Nickelback picked up the trophy for best pop/rock album for “All the Right Reasons”, beating out The Red Hot Chili Peppers.

“This is extremely unexpected,” lead singer Chad Kroeger said.

“We just kinda showed up because we were supposed to give one of these away tonight.”

“We thought for sure the Chilies were gonna just like clean house tonight.”

And just days after her performance at the Grey Cup in Winnipeg, B.C. native Nelly Furtado graced the stage at the AMAs, debuting her new single “Say it Right”.

But the big story of the night was the Black Eyed Peas, who won three awards, including best group in the rap/hip-hop and soul/rhythm categories. The quartet also won favourite rap/hip-hop album for “Monkey Business”.

The group accepted their awards via satellite from Costa Rica and thanked their fans and artists for “keeping hip-hop progressive and pushing it forward.”

The Red Hot Chili Peppers may have lost to Nickelback in one category, but they were honoured in two others, taking statues for favourite alternative artist and favourite pop/rock group. The band accepted their awards via satellite from London.

And it was a big night for actor-turned singer Jamie Foxx, who has successfully made the transition from film to music, picking up the favourite soul/rhythm and blues artist.

“I’m like a rookie in this music thing,” he said. “This means a lot more than you think, man.”

Foxx won an Oscar for his performance in the biopic “Ray”.

The revered R&B queen Mary J. Blige won the favourite female soul/rhythm & blues artist. The newly-single Britney Spears presented the award.

And country singers Faith Hill, Toby Keith and Tim McGraw were big winners.
