Freight Train Derails In West End

Service will resume by the evening on train tracks where 12 freight cars derailed in the west end.

A dozen CP Rail cars jumped the tracks at Osler, near Old Weston Rd. and Davenport Ave., at about 5am Friday. Fortunately no one was injured.

CP Rail spokesperson Ed Greenberg didn’t want to speculate on a cause but according to a businessman in the area crews were working on the tracks Thursday.

Greenberg replied that the work being done was simple maintenance and wouldn’t have altered the tracks. He said other freight services weren’t affected because the company was using alternate routes to move its cargo.

One car apparently struck a building, which sent engineers out to check it for structural damage.

The train was carrying loads of grain and when the derailment occurred, the load spilled all over the ground. Cleanup was expected to take all day and possibly into Saturday.

“They’re bringing in equipment they have contracted in but the nature of which I’m not totally up on,” said Det. Mike Mersereau. “Obviously pick up all the grain material here and obviously to remove the cars. It will take a considerable period of time. Probably expecting most of the day, maybe part of tomorrow as well.”

There’s no word yet on how much damage was caused but full service had resumed by Friday evening.

GO Transit service wasn’t affected by the derailment.
