A grim search for the body of Jyoti Moorthy , who is believed to have perished in a shocking house explosion, continued on Friday with heavy machinery clawing through the charred debris where the house once stood in the St. Clair and Mt. Pleasant area.
The blast totally leveled the home, and Moorthy, who has since been declared missing, was believed to be inside.
She shared the residence with her husband, a University of Toronto professor, and their two children, who were luckily elsewhere when the unpredictable tragedy occurred.
Enbridge was working on the gas line at the time, and a worker for the company was dragged from the flames by Good Samaritans.
For the first time since, the company has commented on what transpired.
“It’s a tragedy and our sympathy goes out to the family involved,” said Arunas Pleckaitis, V.P., Operations for Enbridge. “We’re trying to piece together facts and we’re working with authorities on exactly what happened.”
The Enbridge employee was taken to hospital with second degree burns. He was performing what is called a standard pipe removal.
Enbridge performs that kind of work in up to 10,000 homes a year.
“Until we understand exactly what happened in this particular situation we’ve put a hold on that work across our system,” promised Pleckaitis.
