Dogged Pursuit

There are dumb crooks and then there’s this guy.

When he decided to rob a building in Edmonton on Tuesday, he definitely should have known better.

He opted for a target that just happened to be next door to the place where local police train their canine unit. And despite the fact there were obvious signs clearly marking the structure, he went ahead with his plans to grab what he could take anyway.

But he wasn’t quiet about it. When the cops training the pooches next door heard an alarm go off, they quickly went outside to investigate.

That’s when the crook decided the jig was up. So he got into his stolen car and drove it straight through a garage door and past the stunned officers.

But he didn’t get far. The suspect plowed the vehicle into a snow bank and couldn’t get it out.

You probably already know what happened next.

He opened the door and tried to flee the crime scene on foot. But Wizzard, a well trained police dog, took up the chase.

The four-legged lawman made his own dog collar, and police took the man – and his stolen cashbox – into custody.

Cops still can’t believe he didn’t know any better.

“There was a marked police car parked outside and they were inside the building doing training, which is normal for us,” explains police spokesperson Karen Carlson.  “Then, sure enough, this goes on right next door to them.”

A 23-year-old has been charged. If there were extra penalties for stupidity, he might be looking at a life sentence.
