A big scare led to an unscheduled landing for some 220 Toronto passengers on board a jet taking them to Latin America Monday.
A Skyservice flight heading to Costa Rica had been in the air over Florida after leaving Toronto earlier in the day.
But when strange fumes began wafting into the cabin, the plane was forced to make an emergency landing in Fort Lauderdale.
The pilot called in his request to bring the plane down when the aircraft was about 65 kilometres away from Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport.
“In an abundance of caution, he called it in — as he’s required to — and asked for priority landing clearance, which he got and landed on our runway,” explains the airport’s Gregory Meyer.
Everyone got off while officials checked the plane. So far, there’s no explanation about where those mysterious fumes came from.
A spokesman for the airline calls the diversion “routine” and points out no one was hurt in the detour.
