The Toronto Blue Jays earned their first win in May and snapped their embarrassing nine-game losing streak with a 5-1 victory over the inept Tampa Bay Devil Rays on Friday. Earlier in the day the Jays learned that ace pitcher Roy Halladay would be sidelined for up to 6 weeks after undergoing appendectomy surgery, but A.J. Burnett temporarily made them forget about the loss of their best pitcher with a stellar outing on the mound.
Burnett struck out 10 batters and allowed just five hits on the night. Jays fans, thirsty for any sort of bright spot on an otherwise dim season, gave Burnett a standing ovation. Jason Phillips also had a big outing, hitting a huge two-run double that helped snap the brutal skid.
Unfortunately, the Jays suffered another blow when all-star third baseman Troy Glaus left the game limping in the first inning. There’s no word yet on his status.
