Ankle Injury Could Force Beckham To Skip Toronto Visit

David Beckham is having ankle trouble, and the nagging injury could keep Major League Soccer‘s newest superstar from making his official league debut for the Los Angeles Galaxy when they visit Toronto FC Sunday.

Beckham will miss his third straight game for the Galaxy Tuesday night in SuperLiga action against FC Dallas, putting the scheduled weekend debut in doubt.

“He’s not out here, so he’s obviously not going to Dallas with us,” said Galaxy coach Frank Yallop, a former Canadian international.

Becks hasn’t even trained with the Galaxy yet because of the injured left ankle, and his only appearances were a token public training session on July 16 and 16 minutes in a 1-0 exhibition loss to Chelsea on July 21. Beckham missed SuperLiga games against Pachuca on July 24 and Chivas on Saturday.

“He’s very frustrated,” said Yallop, the former head coach of Canada’s national soccer team. “I feel for him, really, because he wants to get going.

“If it’s up to him and it wouldn’t hinder his injury, he would come with us (to Dallas). But because of flying, all of us said that he just can’t do that. We want him to be getting ready to travel with us on Friday. That’s the thing he’s aiming for.”

Yallop said Beckham would start running Tuesday to keep his fitness up and based on how the former England captain felt on the sore joint, a decision would be made about his weekend status.

Beckham turned the ankle June 6 during England’s 3-0 victory over Estonia in a European Championship qualifier. The former Man United and Real Madrid star played on painkillers during his last game with the Spanish side on June 17.

“I think it just basically stemmed from that,” Yallop said. “When you don’t feel it, you know, you tend to swell up a little bit, and then he started to work on it right before he started to come back for us.
