Devil Rays Sting Jays

Carl Crawford’s two-run homer capped a decisive three-run sixth inning that led the Tampa Bay Devil Rays to a commanding 6-2 win over the Toronto Blue Jays on Wednesday.

Crawford’s blast, his third hit of the game, put the D-Rays up 3-2, and they didn’t let up from there.  Not long after Brendan Harris made it 4-2 with an RBI single.

It was a triumphant resurgence for Crawford, who saw his production fall dramatically after hurting his wrist.  He now has two homers in his last three games after hitting just one over a stretch of 42 games.

“As long as I don’t overswing, it doesn’t hurt,” said Crawford of the tender wrist. “It’s doesn’t bother me when I field, but, yes, definitely glad to rest it on the day off.”

Even Toronto Manager John Gibbons was impressed with Crawford.

“He’s an all-star,” Gibbons said. “He’s got a chance to be an MVP someday. You see guys that are big sluggers. He can do all that, plus that speed and the dimension of his defence. There’s no one better at that, so yeah, we’re tired of looking at him.”

Josh Towers gave up four runs and seven hits in 5 1/3 innings, while Tampa starter Jason Hammel left the game in the fourth after complaining of shoulder pain.
