Trust Fund For Labour Day Accident Victim’s Child

She may be the most tragic of all the Labour Day holiday weekend traffic fatalities. Her name was Jackie Duvall Avelar and she was just 24 years old when her life ended tragically last Friday morning. Avelar is the young mother whose car quit in a live lane of the 401 near Cambridge. She managed to remove her three-year-old daughter from her car seat and get to the shoulder of the highway. But when she returned to get her cell phone to call for help, disaster struck.

She was hit and killed by a truck that rammed into the vehicle before she could escape the impact. To add to the sadness, her little girl watched as the accident happened right in front of her eyes.

Family members mourned Avelar at her funeral earlier this week, and vowed they’d do whatever they could to ensure the child would be looked after. And now they’ve set up a trust fund to make it happen. Contributions can be made in the name of  “Orbella Marie Avelar” at any TD-Canada Trust branch.

The Labour Day holiday was the worst for traffic deaths in more than a decade. At least 14 perished on Ontario highways, despite the presence of the OPP.
