Leafs Thumped By Lowly Coyotes

Ilya Bryzgalov has meant great things for hockey in Phoenix since joining the Coyotes and on Saturday night that meant bad things for the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Bryzgalov made 23 saves for his fourth straight victory since joining Phoenix , leading the Coyotes to a 5-1 victory over the Leafs.

Phoenix’s four-game winning streak is its longest since a seven-game run last Dec. 26-Jan. 9. Meanwhile an already-struggling Leafs club has dropped down another notch, losing four of its last five games.

While the Coyotes seem to have found an answer to their goaltending problems, Toronto ‘s continued as Phoenix scored four goals in the first period, two in an 18-second span.

Daniel Winnik opened the scoring at 4:16 , and Peter Mueller then beat Andrew Raycroft to the short side at 8:24 . Raycroft was then pulled for Vesa Toskala, who was beaten by Steven Reinprecht on the first shot he faced.

Kyle Wellwood countered for Toronto , but Derek Morris made it 4-1 with 1:57 left and Radim Vrbata completed the scoring at 2:05 of the second period.

Up next for the Leafs is a tilt with the rival Montreal Canadiens Tuesday back at the Air Canada Centre.
