Community Rallies Around Explosion Victims Who Lost Everything

A day after a series of explosions tore through a three-unit townhouse complex on Park St. , in Brampton , residents visited the charred remains to see if they could salvage any of their belongings.  It would prove to be a daunting task, as little remained following the fierce inferno.

“I broke down as soon as I walked in.  It’s hard, it’s very, very hard.  My kids have lived here all my life,” said Georgette Thomas, a mother of three.

The fire started when the father of one of the tenants was tinkering with a propane tank, one of several that were stored at the side of one of the units.  That set off a startling series of explosions that were caught on tape.

He has since been charged with mischief, endangering life and possession of stolen property.

The community is now rallying around the affected families.

At  McHugh Public School , where Thomas works part-time, a special fund has been set up for her family.  Call (905) 451-2515 for more information on how you can contribute.

“The kids all know her, they love her, so it’s hitting us a bit hard that somebody that close is suffering this much,” said school principal David Jack.

A trust find has also been set up by Peel Regional Police Victim Services to help all those who lost their homes and possessions. You can make a donation at:
