Juno, No Country For Old Men Receive Oscar Noms

Teen pregnancy comedy Juno, the Coen Brothers’ Texas-based thriller No Country For Old Men, and oil drama There Will Be Blood received multiple Oscar nominations Tuesday.
Juno, lauded by critics and audiences alike, received nominations for best picture, best director for Montreal-born Jason Reitman, and best actress for Halifax’s Ellen Page. It’s also up for best original screenplay, a nod to stripper-turned-scribe Diablo Cody.
“It’s extremely humbling to be recognized with these other actresses, people I respect and admire — it’s crazy,” said 20-year-old Page.
“I just feel so grateful to be part of the film and I’m so happy that people have responded to it in the way that they have.”
No Country For Old Men is also up for best picture, along with best director for Ethan and Joel Coen, best supporting actor for Javier Bardem, and best adapted screenplay.
There Will Be Blood, which tied No Country with a leading eight nominations, competes for best picture, best director for Paul Thomas Anderson, best actor for Daniel Day-Lewis, and best adapted screenplay.
Rounding out the best picture category are Michael Clayton and Atonement.
Toronto’s Sarah Polley also received a nomination, for best adapted screenplay on Away From Her. She competes for that prize with the screenwriters on Atonement, The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, No Country for Old Men and There Will Be Blood.
Away From Her star Julie Christie is up for best actress, competing with Cate Blanchett in Elizabeth: The Golden Age, Marion Cotillard in La Vie En Rose, Page in Juno, and Laura Linney in The Savages.
Blanchett is also up for best supporting actress for her turn as a Bob Dylan-inspired character in I’m Not There. Also receiving nods in that category: Ruby Dee for American Gangster, Saoirse Ronan for Atonement, Amy Ryan for Gone Baby Gone and Tilda Swinton for Michael Clayton.
And though Bardem is considered the frontrunner in the best supporting actor category for his chilling No Country turn, he faces tough competition from Casey Affleck for The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, Philip Seymour Hoffman for Charlie Wilson’s War, Hal Holbrook for Into the Wild, and Tom Wilkinson for Michael Clayton.
In the best directing category, Anderson, the Coens, and Reitman compete with Michael Clayton’s Tony Gilroy and Julian Schnabel for The Diving Bell and the Butterfly.
The National Film Board of Canada’s Madame Tutli-Putli got a nod in the best animated short category as did Bravo’s I Met the Walrus from Toronto animator Josh Raskin.
The awards, which are to be handed out February 24, are in doubt over the ongoing writers’ strike.
