York University students, get ready to rejoice.
Your campus will soon be connected to the Toronto Subway system – in about five years time.
A positive first step took place Thursday, as crews were finally out with shovels near the campus. They were moving sewers so that tunnels can be built underground.
The proposed extension would bring the Spadina line from Downsview Station all the way into York Region.
The province claims it is close to finalizing a funding agreement with the federal government, so that work can begin in earnest.
On Wednesday, Premier Dalton McGuinty said something had “gummed up” movement on the Spadina extension.
Though he did not blame the federal government for the delay, McGuinty did admit that other infrastructure announcements are “clouding this major priority” but he wants those dealt with separately.
“I think I think this one is so big that it eclipses all the others, and I prefer we put the others on a separate table. We’ll address those, and negotiate the timing of those and how we’re going to work with those,” the Premier said Thursday.
The multibillion-dollar project would see the subway line extended from Downsview Station all the way to the Vaughan Corporate Centre, with eight new stops along the route.
The Vaughan Corporate Centre has not yet been built.
