Speed, Alcohol Factors In Fatal Muskoka Crash

The final man killed in a terrible crash was laid to rest Friday.

Tyler Mulcahy, 20, was killed along with Cory Mintz, also 20, and 19-year-old Kourosh Totonchian on July 3. Mintz and Totonchian were buried July 6.

Hundreds of people showed up of the funeral to honour the man described as his father’s best friend. During the eulogies, Mulcahy was remembered as an athlete loved by all.

“It’s horrible to lose a son this young. He was a very good man. You can tell by the amount of people here,” lamented one mourner.

“Devastated. Still am…20 years old, such a beautiful boy, young man. There’s nothing more important than love in his family,” said another.

Mulcahy’s girlfriend, Nastasia Elzinga, attended the packed ceremony. She was in the car when it crashed, but miraculously survived the fatal plunge.

They were driving just east of Minett, near Bracebridge, when the car they were riding in reportedly hit the guardrail on Peninsula Road, spun out into some trees and plunged into the Joseph River below.

Autopsy reports reveal all three drowned.

Elzinga, 19, somehow managed to free herself from the vehicle. She was found dripping wet on the side of the road by a man with a cottage near the crash site.

She was standing on the road opposite a guardrail that had been peeled back 22 metres, twisted and bent like a paperclip.

Behind her was a pine tree split in half, and in the water below, the group’s Audi.

The friends were reportedly visiting Mintz’s mother’s cottage and decided to have lunch at the Water’s Edge, a restaurant on Lake Joseph.

Ontario Provincial Police have determined that alcohol and speed were ‘definite factors’ in the crash.
