Canadian kayaker Adam van Koeverden set a world-best time in the 500-meter kayak single in his qualifying heat on Tuesday.
He won in 1 minute, 35.554 seconds and advanced straight to Thursday’s semifinal. Van Koeverden held the record with a time of 1:35.630 at a World Cup race in June in Poland.
Van Koeverden, the Canadian flag-bearer at the opening ceremony, is the defending Olympic champion in the 500 meter and also won bronze in the 1,000-meter four years ago at the Athens Games.
