Jays On Longest Winning Streak In A Decade – But Will It Matter?

It could be a case of too little, too late. Or maybe it’s more like a whole lot right on time.

Either way you look at it one thing’s for certain: the Blue Jays have a 10-game win streak alive and well and with 18 dates left on the schedule, parked seven games behind the Bosotn Red Sox for the AL wild card berth, it could still make a difference.

The Blue Birds are shooting for 11 in a row Wednesday night when Roy Halladay takes the mound on short rest in Chicago. Should he emerge victorious against the White Sox, the team would match a franchise record for consecutive victories.

And while that would be nice, what would be even better for Cito Gaston’s boys would be to pull off an improbable sweep of the BoSox during the final seven head-to-head meetings they have this year.

The defending World Series champs hit Toronto next weekend in what promises to be a high-energy four-game set with a double header tucked in the middle.

And whether the Jays make the playoffs or fall a little short, the late-season surge could extend the Toronto careers of Gaston, as well as much-maligned general manager J.P. Ricciardi.

“Until we’re mathematically eliminated we’re going to keep fighting each day,” promised team CEO Paul Godfrey.

“Every game is going to be a playoff game for us. Everyone’s job is evaluated at the end of the season,” he added. “Mine included.”
