Canadian Journalism Students To Cover Obama Inauguration

The excitement is building with just two days until Barack Obama becomes the 44th president of the United States of America.

Nearly half a million people converged on the Lincoln Memorial to hear the man himself deliver his message of hope and “American renewal” at a star-studded concert held in his honour.

An estimated 7.5 million Canadians will tune in to watch Obama’s swearing in on Tuesday.

But for some Canucks, watching on TV isn’t good enough. They want to experience history first-hand.

Early Sunday morning, a group of Humber journalism students packed up their car and started the long journey to Washington. But unlike many making the trip down, they’ll be more than just viewers; they got permission to cover the event.

“It’s said to be the largest gathering of people in one place in North American history. I don’t know how I could not want to be a part of that, and to be reporting on that – to have a say in the matter,” noted Graeme Steel.

They’ll be part of the up to one-and-a-half million people expected at the inauguration. But more than that, they’ll be part of history.
