Britney Spears and her three-ringed Circus Tour pulled into town last night for the first of two shows at the Air Canada Centre, and off-stage life theatrics aside, what a circus it was. After a five-year stage hiatus, Britney’s back, b*tches.
Beginning with a 15 minute warm-up show of contortionists, jugglers and acrobatics, along with a maniacal videotaped introduction by self-proclaimed “Queen of All Media,” Perez Hilton, Britney makes her entrance from the rafters, descending in one of the many cages she would find herself in throughout the evening.
The numerous costume changes-about a dozen in all-including a Bollywood-inspired outfit, sexy cop get up, and various blinged out corsets were all designed by Toronto’s very own Dean and Dan Caten of DSquared2.
The show was almost entirely lip-synched, and very highly choreographed, to the point that there doesn’t seem to be much room for spontaneity or interaction with the crowd. In addition to the physical props coming and going from the stage, Spears seemed to be propped up by her dancers, who rarely left her side throughout the 90 minute performance. This may have been orchestrated to boost the energy level, which Britney seemed to be lacking.
Set list leaned heavily on newer songs, including those from her latest release Circus, with the bulk of her hits ( Slave 4 U, Toxic, Hit Me Baby One More Time) closing out the show. Encore was Womanizer. Some of her only words to the crowd were “Thank you, Toronto” as she walked off stage.
