Severe Weather Leaves Thousands Without Power

Residents across Ontario are without power after severe weather swept the province.

The thunderstorm brought winds of 100 km/h, knocking out electricity for thousands across the GTA  mainly in Scarborough, North York and  Etobicoke. And Toronto Hydro has been flooded with calls about downed wires and fallen tree limbs. They say they’ll be working to restore power throughout the night.

“I was surprised when I came out and saw the tree across the road. I called 911 and they said they’re very busy,” explained local resident Antonio Carretta.

Hydro One also reported power outages to 43,000 customers centered in and around Guelph, Clinton, Linden and Listowel in Southwestern Ontario.

Many Torontonians out enjoying the warm, sunny weather were caught by surprise as the black clouds and pelting rain rolled in without warning.

And it was a lovely Saturday.

The mercury soared to 27C and city-dwellers emerged from the woodwork to enjoy the summer-like weather.

But after the rain, we’ll have a much cooler Sunday. Temperatures will plummet to around 12C and there will be more rain throughout the day and the chance of thunderstorms. It’s normal for this time of year, but that doesn’t mean it’s completely welcome.

Things rebound on Monday, with another 24C day, before reality returns, with more showers on Tuesday and cooler temperatures the rest of the week.
