Memorial Service To Be Held For Slain Tamil Youth

A memorial service will be held on Friday for a young man beaten to death just months before he was scheduled to start classes at York University.
Kristian Thanapalan, 22, was killed on July 11.
He had been out playing volleyball with friends, when, police allege, a group of men wielding baseball bats, cricket bats, and beer bottles attacked.
By the time police arrived at the scene on Antrim Crescent, the suspects had fled, leaving Thanapalan collapsed on the road with the head wound that would kill him.
When he died in Sunnybrook Hospital a short time later, he became the city’s 28th murder victim of the year.
Several community groups have planned a walk and a memorial to support Thanapalan’s family.
The Dorset Park Youth Crisis Response Team, along with the Canadian Tamil Youth Development Centre, The Action for Neighbourhood Change, Agincourt Community Services, Youth Link, Rosalie Hall, and ACSA have banded together for the service.
City councillor Norm Kelly will attend, and members of Thanapalan’s family are expected to speak.
