Garbage Collection Resumes Across The City

Following weeks of storing bags in garages and hauling them to temporary dump sites, Torontonians can finally start leaving their trash at the curb again.

Garbage collection resumes Tuesday following a six-week-long city workers’ strike, meaning residents can put out their bags again on their normally scheduled pick-up days. For the time being there’s no limit on the number of bags you can put out. As for recyclables, those that don’t fit in the bins should be placed in clear plastic bags.

The city’s 24,000 inside and outside workers, represented by CUPE Locals 79 and 416, reached a settlement with the City of Toronto last week. The deal was approved at city council last Friday by a slim margin of 21-17.

Crews were back on the job as of 12:01am Friday cleaning up the city – focusing first on the overcrowded garbage bins and messy streets and sidewalks. They then turned their attention to the temporary dump sites, hauling away the estimated 25,000 tonnes of trash that had been left there.

Along with garbage pick-up, other city services reopening Tuesday include day cares, public pools, and splash pads. Check out kids enjoying a water park in the video below.
